District attorney in Aaron Hernandez trial sworn in

Posted: Updated:

A new district attorney has been sworn in to oversee the murder trial of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez and other cases in southeastern Massachusetts.

New Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III was sworn in by Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker Wednesday in Fall River.

Quinn was appointed to the post last month after his predecessor, Sam Sutter, was elected mayor of Fall River. He was first appointed as acting DA by outgoing Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick, then permanently appointed by Baker, a Republican. Quinn took over the district attorney job days before Hernandez's high profile murder trial began.

In his remarks Wednesday, Quinn said he would make illegal possession of firearms a priority and lobby for changes to the state wiretap law that benefit police investigations.
