STONINGTON, CT (AP) -

Former Rep. Rob Simmons is heading to Vietnam where he served during America's long war in the region.

Simmons, a former Republican congressman and currently a Stonington selectman, is a retired Army colonel who served 20 months in Vietnam. He also worked for the CIA in Vietnam for two years between 1967 and 1972.

Simmons said he plans to meet with Vietnam's former ambassador to the United States, Nguyen Tam Chien.

Simmons also will visit Chuck Searcy, a U.S. veteran helping to remove unexploded ordnance and helping Vietnamese struggling with lingering effects of Agent Orange.

He was last in Vietnam in 2003 to help search for the 1972 helicopter crash site of Army Capt. Arnold E. Holm Jr. of Waterford. Holm's remains and two members of his crew were returned in 2011.
