NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Nine parents of children and teachers killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting have quietly filed lawsuits against the estate of the shooter's mother.

They're looking for money from Nancy Lanza's homeowners insurance, according to attorneys.

The families' attorneys said Lanza is believed to have had insurance on her home worth more than $1 million.

Their suits allege that Lanza did not properly keep her firearms in a secure place, which allowed a man with mental health issues to have access to them.

Nancy Lanza was killed by her son, Newtown shooter Adam Lanza, on Dec. 14, 2012 before the shooting deaths of 26 students and staff.

Eight of the suits were filed in Bridgeport Superior Court. A judge is planning a conference on them on April 9.

The remaining one was brought to Danbury.

Eyewitness News has a copy of the lawsuits and will have more details on Eyewitness News starting at 5 p.m.
