HARTFORD, CT (AP) -

Former Arizona U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords is coming to Connecticut to push for new gun control legislation designed to help domestic violence victims.

Critics of one proposal, offered by Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy during his re-election campaign, say it's duplicative and falls short of an existing law that's been on the books for 15 years.

The new legislation would require subjects of a restraining or protective order to surrender their firearms and ammunition within 24 hours of being notified of the order.

Republican state Rep. Arthur O'Neill said the existing law allows police to seize guns immediately if they have a judge's warrant.

A spokesman for Giffords said the Democrat will appear at the state Capitol on Tuesday for a news conference with Malloy and Democratic legislative leaders.
