Hundreds of Connecticut teachers rally against testing

HARTFORD, CT (AP) -

Unionized Connecticut teachers are urging state lawmakers to pass legislation that reduce the amount of standardized student testing in schools.

Hundreds of members of the Connecticut Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers of Connecticut rallied outside the state Capitol on Tuesday. They urged the General Assembly to amend a testing study bill to eliminate the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium or SBAC test.

The teachers said students are being overwhelmed by what they called excessive testing. Lisa Cleveland, a special education teacher in Bloomfield, said some of her third and fourth graders who are reading at a kindergarten level are "stressing out" about taking the test.

A bill awaiting Senate action would require state education officials to study the impact of statewide testing on student learning time, among other issues.
