HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The Hartford Police Department is trying to locate 64-year-old man is accused of luring a young child to his Hartford apartment and then tried to sexually assault the child.

Jose Santos Pedraza, 64, is a registered sex offender in Connecticut "for similar past offenses," police said.

He reportedly lured a child, who police said is between the ages of 5 and 10 years old, and tried to sexually assault him. The little boy got away.

Pedraza fled the Main Street apartment right after the incident and has not been located by police. He also lives right across the street from Capital Prep Magnet School, which is upsetting to those who live and work in the area.

"Yeah that is really upsetting. It's pretty disturbing. I have younger siblings so I wouldn't want them to go through any of that," said Paisley Dowdy of Hartford.

Even though school isn't in session right now, parents said they are still concerned.

"That's very disturbing...especially in this area. I mean there is a school right across the street and to know someone is lurking for kids right in front of a school is shocking," said Rodney Matthews, of Hartford.

While it is unclear if the victim and Pedraza knew each other, the child is not a family member.

"We just want to get him off the streets. We need to protect the children of Hartford," said Hartford Police Officer Kelly Baerga.

Once arrested, Pedraza will be charged with criminal attempt for fourth-degree sex assault, risk of injury to a minor and  disorderly conduct.

Anyone with information should contact Hartford police.
