NEWTOWN, (AP) -

Officials in Newtown are marking progress in the construction of a school to replace the one where a gunman killed 20 children and six educators.

A topping off ceremony is planned Tuesday to mark the placement of the final steel construction beam at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Construction of the new school began in March and is being paid for with a $50 million state grant. The old school was demolished after the December, 2012 massacre.

The new school, on the same site, is expected to open at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.

It's construction comes even as the Newtown school district has endorsed closing another elementary school in the face of declining enrollment.
