A house fire prompted a response from emergency crews in East Lyme.
They said the fire erupted at 40 Cardinal Rd. Wednesday morning.
Neighbors said it happened at the same time
"[It] knocked some pictures off the wall, knocked me out of bed," one neighbor told Eyewitness News. "[I] didn't think anything of it and as I was eating breakfast I heard the fire engines coming down the street. I knew that it had hit something, I just didn't know it was house."
As a result, police said Route 161 was closed near Winthrop Drive.
Drivers can take Butlertown Road or Walnut Hill Road as detours.
There's no word on injuries or what may have caused the fire.
Much of the house appeared gutted and flames could be seen from both the front entrance and on the roof.
Investigators were looking into whether lightning was to blame.
The homeowners were said to be on vacation, but were notified of the fire.
There was no word on a dog and two cats who lived inside.
