MIDDLEFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

Crews pulled an adult male body from Lake Beseck in Middlefield on Tuesday evening.

Officials responded to the lake on Tuesday afternoon for a water rescue.

The search turned into a recovery effort.

At a little before 8:30 p.m. officials confirmed that a man's body was pulled from the lake.

Officials said the man drowned after boating on Tuesday afternoon.

Paul Lucarelli was sitting by the water with friends when he saw the boat stall and a man was screaming for help. Seconds later he said he jumped into the lake.

"You can't sit there and watch that," Lucarelli said. "Probably about halfway to the guy I started to sink so I took my clothes off and started to swim again."

By the time Lucarelli got close to the boat, it was too late.

"The guy was already under," he said.

He and another man who didn't want to be identified were forced to turn around and swim back to shore.

"I knew he passed away before I even got out of the water," Lucarelli said.

The body was pulled form the lake just off of Route 147, also known as Baileyville Road in Middlefield.

No further information was released.
