Police are searching for a missing 17-year-old girl from Clinton who is believed to have taken a flight to Morocco.
Police said that Rebecca Arthur was dropped off at the Delta Airlines terminal of JFK International Airport on Monday.
During their investigation, police determined that she flew to Casablanca, Morocco to meet up with a friend on Facebook, Simo El Adala. Police learned that she arrived at that location on Tuesday.
The teen's mother, officers said, was under the impression she was visiting a friend in California but when she didn't hear from her daughter she called police.
They said they found a photo of a plane ticket to Morocco and messages between the teen and El Adala.
"We don't know if he's real, if he is somebody else, and what her motives were for going to Morocco or why she lied to her mom. We've confirmed with the American Consulate that she arrived safely, but where she went after that, we just don't know," said Clinton Police Sgt. Jerry Dunn.
The pair both posted on social media that they have been dating since February but police said they are not sure if that is his true identity. However, it is believed whoever is overseeing that Facebook account paid for Arthur's flight.
Police said they believe the home-schooled teen may have forged a document to get on the international flight as a teen.
Parents in Clinton said they are praying for the safe return of Arthur.
"I just think its terribly sad and you have to watch out for your kids on social media," said Erica Mychalowsky of Clinton. "It's scary because you don't know really who you're dealing with online. I would be devastated, completely devastated."
Arthur is being described as 5’ and weighs 150lbs, with blue eye and blonde hair with red highlights. When she went to the airport, Arthur was wearing black yoga pants, black sleeveless shirt, and pink, blue, and white Nike brand sneakers.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the Clinton Police Department at 860-669-0451.
