HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Hartford police responded to a deadly shooting on Thursday evening.

Police said the shooting happened in the area of 371 New Park Ave.

At about 6:40 p.m., police said the shooting was a homicide and that a 32-year-old man had died.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News the shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m.

"Usually this is a very nice neighborhood," said Mike Shea.

He said he heard the sound of several "pops" in front of his house but he didn't think they were gunshots.

"I was standing in front of the building around 5:30 and you could hear ‎a 'pop pop pop' one of the guys said that sounds like gunshots. I said 'nah,' that's fireworks," Shea said.

But a few minutes later he discovered his neighbor was right.

"They had a SWAT unit come in all vested and I know they were doing surveillance down in that general area," Shea said.

No arrests have been made but police said they believe the victim may have been targeted.

The victim died at the hospital.

Police said they are asking for witnesses to come forward with information.
