EAST LYME, CT (WFSB) -

A basement was destroyed in an early morning fire in East Lyme, according to fire officials.

It happened on Route 156 and closed the road between Hawks Nest Road and Washington Avenue.

Crews responded just before 4 a.m.

Firefighters said it appeared to have started in a mechanics room, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

They did say they were able to put it out relatively quickly. The basement was deemed uninhabitable.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
