WATERFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Police in Waterford are seeking the public’s help to find a suspected store thief who sped off in a car at dangerous speeds with a young child.

They said it happened at the Target store at the Crystal Mall on Route 85.

They identified a person of interest in the case on Thursday morning.

Police said that when the woman spotted a police car, she ran through the parking lot, dragging the child with her. They said that she then drove off in the car at a speed of 100 miles per hour.

"For the safety of the child, the sergeant did not continue to follow that vehicle," said Lt. David Burton, Waterford police.

Surveillance photos captured some of the incident around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said they show the woman getting into a silver-colored Volkswagen with Connecticut plates.

They said she hopped on Interstate-95 northbound.

Police believe the child is hers.

They believe she was from the New Haven-West Haven area.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
