Turnpike reopened in Berlin after deadly crash

BERLIN, CT (WFSB) -

The Berlin Turnpike has reopened in both directions after being shutdown Sunday morning in Berlin for a deadly crash involving a motorcycle.

According to officials the crash occurred shortly after 12 a.m. near Overhill Road and involved the motorcycle and one vehicle.

Witnesses told police the motorcycle struck the side of a car that was attempting to make a u-turn at the intersection.

The operator of the motorcycle, identified as a 26-year-old man, was rushed to Midstate Medical Center in Meriden were he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, police said.

The 29-year-old female driver of the car was taken by ambulance to Hartford Hospital where she underwent surgery and is currently listed in guarded condition.

A Lifestar helicopter was called to the scene at one point, but was later canceled.

Officials shut down the roadway for several hours in both directions between Toll Gate Road and Orchard Road.

Berlin police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at 860-828-7080.

The road was reopened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
