Cities and towns prepare cooling centers

In anticipation of a potential heatwave that could span most of the week, officials across the state will open cooling centers.

WFSB's meteorologists predicted temperatures in the 90s with high humidity for most of the week.

Here's a list of places where people can cool off:

Avon

  • Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Rd.9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Rd., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bloomfield 

  • The Alvin & Beatrice Wood Human Services Center, 330 Park Ave., 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Prosser Library, 1 Tunxis Ave., 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday) and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.  (Friday)
  • McMahon Wintonbury Library, 1015 Blue Hills Ave., 1 p.m. – 8 p.m. (Tuesday/Thursday), 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. (Wednesday/Friday)

Canton

  • Canton Community Center, 40 Dyer Center, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Monday – Friday)
  • Canton Library 40 Dyer Center, Mon.-Thurs. 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.  Fri: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Sat. 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Cheshire

  • Cheshire Public Library, 104 Main Street from 9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. 
  • Cheshire Senior Center, 240 Maple Avenue from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. 

Enfield

  • Enfield Senior Center, 299 Elm St., normal business hours

  • Pearl Street Library at 759 Pearl St.   
  • Enfield Police Department, 293 Elm St. Lobby available 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
