Police in Willimantic are investigating what they're calling a "musket mishap."
They said a man lost two fingers from his left hand Wednesday night while mishandling a ceremonial style musket in his driveway.
Investigators said the 39-year-old victim put too much gunpowder into the weapon before it fired. The chamber pressure of the gunpowder caused the weapon's barrel to actually explode from the wooden stock.
The man was transported to the Windham Hospital emergency room by family members.
Police said they are not identifying the man and no criminal charges have been filed against him.
The musket is now at the Willimantic police headquarters as evidence for the case.
