Seven Navy corpsmen who will serve as the only medical professional aboard their assigned submarines are graduating Friday from a training program at the base in Groton.
Vice Adm. Matthew Nathan, the Navy's surgeon general, is scheduled to speak at the graduation ceremony for the Naval Undersea Medical Institute class for submarine force corpsmen.
In addition to providing medical training to assigned submarine crew members, the institute offers instruction in radiation health for sailors and officers taking assignments across the fleet.
Attack submarines like those assigned to the Navy base in Groton typically have a crew of more than 130 sailors and officers.
