They began their search on Wednesday after members of New Haven’s homeless community told detectives that Ray Roberson had been sleeping there.
Roberson was the 54-year-old victim whose severed legs were located downtown earlier this month, according to police.
"It’s a little surprising you know,” said Andrew Proffitt, who works downtown. “At first, I wasn't too worried. [There’s] a few blocks buffer, [it’s a] different part of New Haven. But now that parts have been found closer and closer to work, it makes me think twice."
When police entered the building, they said they found David Andaz, also known as David Pollock. Police said the vacant building had electricity and he was charged with trying to steal it.
He was also charged with burglary and violating his probation.
Police said Andaz’s arrest is not directly related to Roberson’s death. However, police have interviewed him.
Police have not identified the torso yet, though they said it seems probable that it could be Roberson. They said they will treat it as two cases until forensic evidence can link the body parts or eliminate the possibility.
The developments are leaving New Haven’s homeless population, along with those helping them, with plenty of concerns.
