Two arrested for attempted AT&T store device heist

NEWINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

Police in Newington said two men were caught in the act trying to steal phones and tablets from an AT&T store.

Carlos Cartagena, 30, of Newington, and Angel Diaz, 30, of New Britain, face a list of charges, according to police.

Officers said they responded to the Berlin Turnpike store's burglar alarm around 3:45 a.m. on Monday.

They said they immediately found one suspect outside of the store.

A search with a K9 unit found a second suspect hiding in the ceiling.

Evidence at the scene revealed that the suspects entered the store through a hatchway in the roof and took a large number of cell phones and tablets from display counters, police said.

Cartagena was charged with third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal trespass and possession of burglar's tools.

He was detained on a $100,000 bond.

Diaz was charged with third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal trespass, possession of burglar's tools and interfering with an officer.

He also was held on a $100,000 bond.

Both suspects are set to face a judge on Tuesday.
