NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

A New Britain man was arrested and charged with assaulting the city’s mayor last Friday.

The incident reportedly happened at Walnut Hill Park where police said Al Mayo was cursing around children and allegedly grabbed the mayor’s arm.

Mayo is an independent candidate who is running for mayor this year.

Mayo defended himself in court on Monday and insists he didn’t touch the mayor, but that isn’t what Mayor Erin Stewart said.

She and other city leaders were in Walnut Hill Park for the mayor’s Pencil Hunt, for city children.

Mayor was not invited to the event but came anyway and was asked to stay away from children but witnesses said he got loud and started cursing.

Stewart told police she used her arm to get Mayo to leave the park “when she pointed that Mayo grabbed her arm above the wrist and pushed it down.”

According to Stewart, Mayo has shown up at other events uninvited. Once, he was shirtless wearing boxing gloves and another time she told police he accused her of being a racist.

This is Mayo’s second time running as an independent for mayor. He now wants to hire a lawyer and won’t discuss the details of what happened in the park.

Mayo is not to have any contact with Stewart.

She did not comment on the matter because it is a pending case.
