GROTON, CT (WFSB) -

Groton police have identified the man who was killed on his way to work on Tuesday.

Police said Albert “Big Al” Smith, 50, of Ledyard was killed in a crash on Tuesday morning.

He was driving on Flanders Road when the tree fell on the passenger portion of his Jeep, according to police.

Smith was a 29-year employee for the Groton Department of Public Works.

What's unclear is whether it was lightning or wind that brought the tree down.

On Tuesday, officials do believe that the crash was weather-related as powerful storms swept through the area around that time.
