New Haven police are investigating the city's 11th homicide of the year after a man was found shot on East View Terrace Wednesday night.

It happened at a public housing complex just off Eastern Street in the Fair Haven section of the city near the Bella Vista retirement community.

Police said they found Lawrence Allen Atkins, 35, of New Haven, suffering from a gunshot wound to his shoulder around 10:25 p.m. He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital and died around 11:25 p.m.

Officers at the scene reported Atkins was alone when they found him.

The area remained taped off by police on Thursday morning. Detectives with the department's homicide division and bureau of identification spent Thursday morning searching the scene and gathering evidence.

They also spoke to a number of people who live in the neighborhood.

"We don't have a lot of trouble in this ward," said Robert Lee, a neighbor. "It's a nice community over there, but all communities have their problems."

Police said any help they can receive from the public will be key in cracking the case.

The housing authority's executive director said it pays New Haven police for extra duty patrols, and there are security cameras on site.

No witnesses have come forward and police are asking for anyone with any information to contact them at 203-946-6304. Calls may be made anonymously.
