WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A Department of Correction prisoner transport van hit a medical building in West Hartford on Monday morning.

DOC officials said the van was taking prisoners to their scheduled outpatient medical appointments when it crashed into UConn Health Partners, located at 65 Kane St., around 11 a.m. The vehicle hit the ceiling above a parking area, police said.

“The prisoner van had driven almost the entire length of the roadway under the building,” West Hartford Police Capt. Jeffery Rose said

The crash prompted the building to be evacuated, according to police.

For safety reasons, acting DOC Director Karen Martucci said she could not release the number of staff and inmates in the van. However, Martucci said there were no reported injuries to offenders, staff or civilians.

Rose said there was “damage to the facade of the building as well as the ceiling and a water pipe.” However, inspectors deemed the building safe and people were allowed back in later on Monday.

The van is “fully operational with minor damage to the roof,” Martucci said.

Police said height of building was not posted at the entrance of the parking area.

Martucci said “there is no indication that staff negligence was a factor in the accident.” But, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
