A man is accused of severely cutting another man with a box cutter after the victim tried to protect the suspect’s girlfriend.
Police in Ansonia said they arrested 31-year-old Mario Forbes for the crime.
They said they were called to Clifton Avenue on Monday for a report of a physical dispute involving a man with a possible knife.
When they arrived, police said they found a victim who was holding a blanket to his neck.
The victim told officers that he had tried to break up a dispute between Forbes and Forbes’ girlfriend. Forbes allegedly came at the female with a machete and box cutter, so the victim became involved.
Police said the victim suffered a severe laceration to the throat and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was treated and released.
Forbes’ girlfriend was physically assaulted and suffered a head injury, according to police. She had to be transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport where she was treated and released.
Forbes was taken into custody at the scene.
Police said they charged him with first-degree assault, third-degree assault, third-degree strangulation, first-degree reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.
Forbes was held on a $150,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Derby Superior Court on Tuesday.
