WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Police have yet to officially identify the body found in a vehicle on Sunday, but they believe it may be a missing person.

An autopsy is expected to be performed on Monday.

The vehicle containing the decomposing body was found in the Red Robin restaurant parking lot of Corbin’s Corner Shopping Center in West Hartford.

Farmington police have said they’ve taken the lead on the investigation since it’s believed that the car is connected to a missing person case in their town from several weeks ago.

"That's pretty crazy because I live right down the street and I work at the mall across the street,” said Stacy Brenner of West Hartford.

West Hartford police said they received an unsettling call Sunday afternoon from a customer.

"There was a foul odor coming from the car, and they believe they found a body inside,” said Det. Sgt. Eric Rocheleau, West Hartford police.

The body was found inside the red Honda Civic with Georgia license plates.

“Obviously there's a million different reasons that person could have ended up there,” Rocheleau said. “It could be a medical condition. It could be a suicide. It could be a murder.”

An employee at the shopping center told Eyewitness News that according to surveillance video, the car had been in the parking lot for at least a week and a half. However, police would not confirm that.

"It's an active investigation,” Rocheleau said. “It's suspicious in nature."

Farmington police have not released any information about the missing person case.
