WILLIMANTIC, CT (WFSB) -

Police in Willimantic said they arrested a suspect in a vicious armed robbery.

Joshua Omar Sauri, 29, was taken into custody following his alleged robbery of two women in the Gem Drive and Roanoak Avenue area.

He faced a judge on Wednesday morning at Danielson Superior Court.

Court officials revealed that he may have an underlying drug addiction, so there are some medical issues. They also said he has a lengthy criminal history.

Police said they received information that the suspect was in the Cameo Drive area and had been in contact with him since Sunday. A K9 unit found him hiding between two buildings.

Sunday night, police said he was involved in a standoff that lasted nearly seven hours.

Before that, they said he robbed the women at gunpoint than ran into a home on Gem Drive.

"I'm in shock because this is a very, very quiet neighborhood,” said Brenda Ingles, a neighbor.

The Willimantic Police Department’s SWAT team responded.

"We were in phone contact with the gentleman we were looking for,” said Cpl. Stanley Parizo, Jr., Willimantic police. “He hung up on us."

Eventually, Sauri told them that he was not in the house. The SWAT team learned that around 5:30 a.m. when they entered the home with a warrant.

Police said after that, they expanded their search, which led them to Cameo Drive on Wednesday morning.

He was charged with first-degree robbery and held on a $250,000 bond.
