WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

As West Haven Public Schools prepare for the first day off classes on Thursday, they've joined a handful of other districts offering the high tech tools.

Adriana Flores took a look at the new app for West Haven schools while her kids giggled in the background.

"It looks great," Flores said.

However, school officials are hoping more people download the app.

"It's been maybe a little slower," said Communications Director Susan Misur.

The West Haven Public Schools app allows parents to check out everything from the lunch menu and sports calendar as well as news push alerts. The app also allows parents to connect with the school's Facebook and Twitter pages. There is also a parent portal that they can access through the app.

“We want them to get the information on a timely basis,” West Haven Public Schools Superintendent Neil Cavallaro said. “If there's something going on in the school, you know, a lockdown situation. We're able to notify them of that."

West Haven is joining some of the larger districts along the shore line such as Stamford, New Haven and New London who have their own apps.
