Two Connecticut areas have been named the most expensive places to raise a family in the country.
The Economic Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank, released data on Wednesday that led to the list.
According to its Family Budget Calculator, families need $50,000 to $100,000 to pay the bills and have some left over for savings, depending on where they live.
The EPI’s study looked at 618 areas and determined the cost of living for a two parent, two child family based on housing costs, child care, travel, health care and other metrics.
Ranking 5th is the Stamford-Norwalk area.
The EPI’s calculator said it costs a family $97,350 to stay afloat. Most of that money goes toward housing.
Danbury is 10th, according to the data. It costs a family just over $89,000 to cover the bills. Much of it goes towards housing and child care.
To put those places into context with two other Connecticut areas, the New Haven-Meriden region costs families $83,255 while it's $81,623 for those living in the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford area.
Washington D.C. is the most expensive in the country, the EPI’s research said. A family of four burns more than $106,490, mostly in child care costs.
