HADDAM, CT (WFSB) -

A tractor trailer crash on Route 9 northbound in Haddam left a man dead on Friday morning.

The driver, identified as 47-year-old David Canfield of East Hampton, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police.

Troopers said the crash happened between exits 8 and 9. They had been shutting down the highway on and off for their investigation and clean up.

The entire highway was reopened at a little before noon.

State police said the truck was traveling northbound just past exit 8 when, for an unknown reason, Canfield traveled into the left shoulder and collided with a metal guardrail. The truck then went down an embankment.

There's no word on what caused the crash. Investigators are looking into it.

The state Department of Transportation, Haddam Fire Department and state police were called to assist with the investigation.
