Plainville police have arrested a mother and father after a 3-year-old child was allegedly abused.

An arrest warrant states the 3-year-old told police “daddy” was behind the abuse, and police arrested both parents, Richard Martel and Danielle Wells.

Neighbor Amy Gentile said the couple seemed like good parents.

“I would see them in the parking lot with their daughter, just hanging around playing with her,” Amy Gentile said about her Whiting Street neighbors.

According to an arrest warrant, last month the parents noticed their 3-year-old daughter had a “Bump on her forehead, swelling on her left elbow, marks on her face/neck area, bruising on her legs, and redness on her back."

The child allegedly told police “Daddy is mad at me, I’m scared.”

“The 3-year-old child had suffered extensive ‎injuries to her body. The child was taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for evaluation,” said Plainville Police Lt. Nicholas Mullins.

Police said on one occasion, Martel allegedly would grab his daughter “by her neck and throw her onto the bed.”

He also reportedly told police the bump on his daughter’s head came from her falling off a bike that she rode behind their home.

At first, Martel allegedly denied striking the child but in later interviews he reportedly admitted to striking the child on several occasions.

Martel was arrested last week.

“I am shocked. I know how much he loves his daughter and when he found out that he had a daughter it was ‎his world,” Gentile said.

Mullins said “due to the fact that the child's mother Danielle Wells was aware of the abuse and failed to report it,” she was also arrested.

Police said even though they were notified about the abuse last month, it took them several weeks to confirm the abuse happened.

The 3-year-old girl is in the care of the Department of Children and Families recovering from her injuries.
