A Bristol family is offering contestants the chance to own a mortgage-free home.
Heather and Ken Kimball said they're "selling" their home to a family or individual, who pens the best essay. They are asking people who are in need of a second chance to write a short essay about why they're deserving of this three-bedroom home, which sits in a quiet city neighborhood.
"Whether it's into a larger home so that we can accommodate my parents or moving into an area where they could also come to," Heather Kimball said.
There is an $85 entry fee, and all the proceeds will go to paying off the mortgage left on the home. The additional funds left will go to the Kimballs as they move to be closer to Heather's parents.
"So many people, they don't have the money, the credit, the jobs that would support owning a home and that's typically the American dream," Heather Kimball said.
The Kimballs said selling the home through a realtor isn't an option.
"We're kind of in a position where it would be very difficult to sell our house, not impossible, but very difficult to do it traditionally," Heather Kimball explained.
They said the new homeowner will be responsible for the property taxes and utilities, which come in just under $500 a month.
“In normal day-to-day life you don't really get to help people out in a big way and this would be a huge thing to get to give someone a home,” Heather Kimball said.
The deadline for entering is Feb. 28 of next year.
"It's $85, which is not a huge loss," Heather Kimball said. "There's a great chance of winning because it's not like a lottery where millions of people are playing, so there's a very high chance of your essay being selected."
Ken Kimball said they are not looking for a profit.
"We don't need too much to help our situation, but the fact that we get to help someone else, it really moves us," he said.
The winner will also receive $5,000 to put towards the home or utilities.
