ELLINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

The Ellington community is mourning the death of a high school student.

Superintendent of Schools Scott Nicol sent out a message that Ellington High School freshman Jordyn Engler died on Saturday.

According to the Ulster county Sheriff's Office, Engler and her father, Jeff Engler were tubing at Esopus Creek in Shandaken, New York.

The tube the pair was riding on overturned tubing near the Allaben Cemetery around 11:15 a.m.

Rescue crews were able to pull Jeff from the water, but Jordyn became stuck under debris in the water,  according to Times Herald-Record.

Jordyn body was pulled from the water several hours later.

Esopus Creek is a part of the New York City watershed.  Four times a year the Shandaken Portal is open wider which provides a faster water flow through the area.

Jordyn was an active member of the Fierce All-Star Cheer Team in Manchester.

Grief counselors will be on hand this weekend to help support students, teachers and staff deal with the loss. The counselors will be inside the media center at Ellington High School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Engler family and friends,” Nicol said.
