Late summer heat, humidity continues for another day

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A heat wave is possible this week.

Chef meteorologist Bruce DePrest said Tuesday was the hottest day of the year. Windsor Locks saw a temperature of 96 degrees as of 2:45 p.m.

That breaks a record of 95 degree set in 2007.

An air quality alert was also issued until 11 p.m. by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The alert was issued for Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven and New London counties.

Many schools have called for early dismissals. See the list here.

A list of any cooling centers opening across the state can be found here.

The heat and humidity will continue for Wednesday.

"There is the potential for more record or near record heat tomorrow," DePrest said. "The record high at Windsor Locks for Sept. 9th is 91 degrees, set in 2002."

Though the temperature will be slightly lower on Wednesday, the humidity will likely be higher.

If it reaches 90 degrees on Wednesday, DePrest said it would be the first heat wave in September since 1983.

"A few scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible tomorrow afternoon and evening, but many towns in Connecticut will remain dry," DePrest said.

A cold front is expected to move in on Thursday, bringing showers and possibly thunderstorms along with it.

"Some showers and storms will produce very heavy downpours. Clouds and showers will also hold temperatures down on Thursday," DePrest said.

Temperatures will be in the 80s but it is expected to be humid.

There could be rain Friday morning but it should end by the afternoon, DePrest said.
