The University of Connecticut said it is taking steps to help victims of sexual assault.
The school launched a new website to deal with sexual violence and harassment on campus.
It came in the wake of a lawsuit filed by women who claimed UConn did not take their sexual assault claims seriously.
UConn said it’s a more proactive approach.
Students said the crimes have become a serious concern for many college campuses. Students said they wanted to know what support is there for them.
"I think it’s a huge issue and if kids can have the resources it’s very important,” said Lindsey Brown, a UConn freshman.
Freshmen said a lot was said about sexual assault during UConn’s orientation.
"They said a lot on sexual assault,” said Samantha Adamo, a UConn freshman. “I thought it was very helpful. They talked about consent and all the things like that."
"They told all the international students what consent and other concepts that are essential common knowledge of living here,” said Teng Huang, a UConn PhD student.
The new website is called TitleXI.UConn.edu.
It provides information about the school’s sexual discrimination policies and how to file a police report with university officials.
It also has links to medical services and counseling as well as information for friends, family and partners on how they can support a victim of sexual assault or harassment.
The students were unaware of the recent lawsuit against the university by five women who claimed they were assaulted and help was lacking. UConn said it eventually reached a settlement for $1.3 million.
A spokesperson for the school said “prevention is a priority” and the intent of the website is to “make it easy to access information.”
"What they presented at orientation I think it as to cover that people often think it’s their fault,” said Korinne Portley, a UConn freshman. “They covered that really well."
The lawsuit brought about other changes as well.
Connecticut lawmakers recently passed new laws which require universities to take certain steps to address violence on campus. They also outline steps to take when there is an incident.
