Stamford burglary suspect chased into bookstore, arrested by police

STAMFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A man police said was responsible for a number of burglaries in downtown Stamford was arrested on Friday.

They said Carl Dawkins was apprehended after a foot chase that went through a mall and ended in a Barnes and Noble bookstore.

Police said the had to forcibly take him down inside the store.

Investigators also learned that Dawkins tried to throw out a handgun inside the bookstore's bathroom.

Officers said they had been searching for Dawkins earlier in the day and learned he was downtown with his girlfriend. They spotted the girlfriend, which led them to Dawkins.

Dawkins was charged with interfering with police, criminal possession of a handgun, two counts of third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny and two counts of second-degree criminal mischief.

He's set to face a judge later this month, according to police.
