A 5-year-old’s prized Power Wheels was stolen from his home in New London and his parents are desperate to track it down.

Ashley Campbell, the boy’s mother, said she’s hoping that whomever took it will have a heart to bring it back to their Maple Avenue home.

"He put so much effort into working on it,” Campbell said. “That's the part that hurt the most was seeing how happy he was and how proud he was."

Working and riding on the toy had become little Peyton Campbell’s favorite past time. Peyton has autism.

“[He] stripped it. Painted it,” Ashley Campbell said. “They picked out stickers, picked out the color."

Ashley Campbell said they recently bought the second-hand Jeep. She said Peyton and his father spent hours fixing it up and making it his own for the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

“He had so much fun that day that that was like the trophy for him,” she said. “That was his reward. Working hard on his Power Wheels to do the race. He came in second place. He couldn't have been more proud."

However, she said the toy vehicle was taken sometime last Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

The Campbells’ driveway is about three car lengths long. They said taking the toy took effort.

“It was thought out, and when you're thinking out something like that, to me that's malicious,” Ashley Campbell said.

She said Peyton took the news especially hard.

“When he did come home and we told him what happened, it was very hard,” Ashley Campbell said. “He did not understand why. He asked why didn't their mommy buy them their own Power Wheels? Why did they have to take mine?"

Ashley Campbell said the family will not press charges. They just want it returned in one piece.

She said the toy is worth about $450.

This is the second crime to hit Maple Avenue within a week. Over the weekend, Chloe the kitten had her leg intentionally broken. She was found a few doors down from the Campbells’ home.

Anyone with information is asked to call the New London Police Department.
