Firefighters are battling a Chinese restaurant blaze in Prospect Tuesday morning.
It broke out inside the Golden Wok at 14 Waterbury Rd. just after 5:15 a.m.
The Department of Transportation said Route 69 was closed near Center Street because of the fire. It reopened around 7:45 a.m.
The owner of the restaurant told Eyewitness News that the fire started at a business next door.
Mayor Robert Chatfield said an eyewitness heard glass breaking while at a nearby Dunkin' Donuts and reported the fire shortly afterward.
By the time firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke. The intensity forced them to pull back their interior attack.
The Waterbury Fire Department said it was called to help with a ladder truck and said it went into defensive mode, which meant firefighters fought the fire from the outside.
Chatfield said it took about 45 minutes to knock down the fire.
No one appeared to be inside at the time, but he said it appears to have started at offices connected to the restaurant.
The building is likely a total loss.
Eyewitness News has a crew heading to the scene.
