BRIDGEPORT, CT (WFSB) -

A Bridgeport man is accused of leaving a 3-year-old child alone in a motor vehicle overnight while he told police he slept inside his home after drinking too much.

An unidentified woman told police that a child was “crouching in the middle section of the vehicle between the front and back seats” on Arctic Street around 7 a.m. on Saturday.

The woman immediately called 911 and took the child out of the unlocked car. She took the child with her and waited the 3-year-old on her porch until police arrived.

Upon arrival, officers and medical professionals determined that the “child was in good physical condition.” The child was taken to Bridgeport Hospital for evaluation.

Police determined that 22-year-old Jeffrey Mejias was the last person to use the vehicle. His grandmother told police Mejias lived near where officers located the vehicle.

Officers located the child’s mother who told police that she was “unaware that the child was not in the home” and said she was working until 2 a.m.

When the mother returned home, she told police that “her bedroom door locked, and assumed the child was in the room with the mother’s boyfriend.”

The child’s mother was taken to Bridgeport Hospital to see the child.

Officers started towing the vehicle and that’s when Mejias arrived on the scene. He told police that he and the child “were in the vehicle when the tire went flat.”

Mejias admitted to police “he had a lot to drink that night and went inside the home to get something” That’s when he said he “simply fell asleep in the bedroom.”

Mejias was arrested without incident. He was charged with risk of injury to a child. His bond was set at $20,000.
