It’s no secret that a McDonald’s Big Mac isn’t the healthiest thing a person could eat.
The website FastFoodMenuPrice.com sought out to prove that with a flowchart-like graphic that maps out what the 540 calorie burger does to the human body in 60 minutes.
The graphic outlines a rise a blood sugar, dehydration and an urge to eat more after finishing.
Here’s how it breaks down:
First 10 minutes:
There's a rise in blood sugar to abnormal levels and the brain triggers “feel-good” chemicals like neurotransmitter dopamine. That means the meal works similarly to cocaine use.
After 20 minutes:
The bun’s high levels of high-fructose corn syrup and sodium makes the body crave more.
After 30 minutes:
With 970 milligrams of sodium, it can trick the body into thinking it’s dehydrated, which means the eater thinks he or she can go back for another helping.
Sodium makes it hard for the kidneys to excrete salt. To flush the excess salt from the system, the body draws water from other tissues. The fluid buildup makes the heart work harder to pump blood. That means high blood pressure.
After 40 minutes:
The body can lose control of its blood sugar, making the eater crave even more. This is because the insulin response can reduce glucose levels.
The high-fructose corn syrup from the bun is absorbed by the GI tract, causing insulin spikes and even greater hunger pangs.
After 60 minutes:
The body prepares for a long period of digestion. Burgers like the Big Mac take more time to digest due to the grease. It can take up to three days. Plus, the 1.5 grams of trans fat in it can take up to 51 days to fully digest.
