BLOOMFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

A Connecticut man puts his hopes into hops, and it is paying off for a local farmer who is making history.

On Thursday, the first batch of hops was added to the mix at one of the most popular breweries in the region- Thomas Hooker Brewery in Bloomfield.

Hops were hand delivered by Doug Weber from Morris, and after Friday, one batch of beer will have used those Connecticut hops.

"It's been a long time in coming and it's great to have Thomas Hooker using my hops, you couldn't ask for a better brewer and I'm delighted to be a part of this,” said Weber, of Pioneer Hops of Connecticut.

Eyewitness News first visited Weber’s farm a few weeks ago where he is growing hops that he hoped to sell to brewers in the state.

Now, he’s toasting to a relationship with Thomas Hooker Brewery.

"Yeah, this is the first time my hops have been used in a commercial beer, I brewed some of it at home a couple of weeks ago, but this is the first time it has been brewed commercially,” Weber said.

Hops are used for bittering, flavoring and aroma, and Weber and his crew harvested theirs on Friday morning.

It was the first harvest, weighing about 7.5 pounds.

"Next year, we will harvest what will eventually become about 3,000 palletized pounds which is actually about 30,000 pounds of wet hops,” Weber said.

Curt Cameron, of Thomas Hooker Brewery, brews almost five million 12 ounce beers each year.

"It's not uncommon that you can go to the store and find one of our beers that was bottled a couple of days earlier, which I always love,” Cameron said.

He added that he loves using local hops, which they’ve used before, but this particular batch is going into a new brew for the Connecticut beer drinker.

"It allows us little guys who are much better equipped to change on a dime and we can make a lot of different beers very quickly,” Cameron said.
