A Hartford mother is being questioned by police after her 4-year-old child was found wandering alone in Hartford on Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday afternoon, Hartford police asked for the public’s help in locating Shi’day Nicks, 22, after her 4-year-old daughter, Shafyalya Nicks, was found wandering alone in the area of 182 Collins St.
Sharon Terrell spotted the child and walked up to her to help at around the same time police arrived.
"That's the first thing I said 'what a pretty girl...who would leave her out there'," Terrell said.
Police said the child resides at 150 Collins St., but nobody was located inside the apartment when they went to check.
Mail at the apartment revealed that a Shi’day Nicks lived at the apartment, but neighbors said she had just moved into the apartment building and is not well known by neighbors.
"I was wondering where this little girl where did she come from. Nobody had ever seen her before," Terrell said.
The child was in good health when she was found and is in the care of the Department of Children and Families.
Shi’day Nicks, who has previous addresses of Orange Street in Springfield, Mass., and 23rd St. in Meridian, Miss., was found in Hartford on Tuesday night.
She is being questioned by police, who said an arrest is likely and Nicks is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
