They are making room for more students in East Hartford.
As part of the state's "Smart Start" grant, two classrooms at the Hockanum Elementary School were renovated over the summer to make room for 30 new preschool students.
Along with new furniture and ceilings, officials said the classrooms were fitted with new state-of-the-art technology to help the young students learn.
"It gives them a 'smart-start' if you will," said Lisa Beauchamp, principal. "It gets them ready for kindergarten. And when they get in there, they've got the basic skills that they need. They are off and running in kindergarten."
The new classrooms opened this fall.
