A number of state laws went into effect on Thursday, including one that has a lot of people talking.
It is now much faster to get a divorce in Connecticut, thanks to two new simplified processes.
While getting a divorce used to take months, this new law allows those who are eligible to obtain one in 35 days or less, without having to appear before a judge.
To be eligible, you must have been married eight years or less, have no children and neither person is pregnant, the total value of all property you own together is less than $35,000, there are no restraining or protective orders between the spouses.
Some of the benefits of the first process are that you can obtain a divorce in 35 days or less, compared to the regular process that takes at least three months, and you don’t have to take time off from work to come to court. Also, people can move on with their lives more quickly.
The new process applies to couples who have reached an agreement on all terms of their divorce.
They may now file a motion to ask a judge to waive the 90-day waiting period that is part of the dissolution process.
