A Milford man is facing charges after police said he allegedly left his 15-month-old child alone for over an hour.
Jason Demonte, 31, of Melba Street was charged with risk of injury to a minor.
Police said on Sunday evening they responded to Melba Street near Beachland Avenue for reports of an intoxicated man roaming the neighborhood. A neighbor had called police after noticing a drunk man talking to himself near a driveway.
Officers identified the man as Demonte, who had allegedly left his daughter unattended in an unsecured home for over one hour. He told police he put his daughter down to sleep at around 6:30 p.m., "had a couple of drinks at his home," went for a walk with his brother, including stopping at the Beachcomber, but told police he didn't drink there.
However in a police report, police said it was apparent that Demonte was "very intoxicated. He was slurring his words and a strong odor of alcohol was emitting from him."
"Never had this happen around here. I'm shocked, actually sick to my stomach that somebody could do something like this," said Luba Shumylo of Milford.
Police said the mother of the child was at work and Demonte, her fiance, was supposed to be watching the child.
He was held on a $75,000 bond.
According to court paperwork, the 31-year-old works for General Electric in human resources. In court on Monday it was noted that he was twice cited for driving under the influence.
The Department of Children and Families was notified on Monday.
As part of Demonte's release, he will undergo an alcohol evaluation and, per a protective order, he cannot be left unsupervised with his daughter.
