GROTON, CT (WFSB) -

The First Lady will be on hand to christen a new submarine during a ceremony this weekend in Groton.

First Lady Michelle Obama will join General Dynamics Electric Boat in christening the Illinois on Oct. 10.

The Illinois is the U.S. Navy's newest and most advanced nuclear attack submarine, the company said.

Obama is the ship's sponsor and participated in the keel laying of the Illinois in 2014.

The principal speaker of the christening event will be Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

The Illinois is the 13th ship of the Virginia class. The class of submarine is equipped to handle land, air, sea and space-based assets, according to General Dynamics Electric Boat.

The christening is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday. Live coverage of the event can be seen here.
