Legislative Republicans are continuing their call for a special legislative session to address Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's mid-year budget cuts by submitting petitions to the Secretary of the State.

But leaders of the General Assembly's minority party acknowledged Tuesday they need at least four Democrats in the Senate and 12 Democrats in the House to join all 79 Republicans in signing the petition.

Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano urged lawmakers who disagree with Malloy's approximate $102 million in cuts to hospitals and human service programs to "stand up and take action" and support a special session to "rethink this budget to prevent a health care crisis."

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey called the petitions "a political stunt."

He said Democrats plan to announce alternatives to Malloy's cuts, which he called devastating.
