A 24-year-old woman is under arrest for allegedly harming the little girl.
Felicia Marie O’Brien, of East Hampton, was arrested on Wednesday and was arraigned at Middletown Superior Court on Thursday. O’Brien was charged risk of injury to a minor and intentional cruelty to persons.
In court, judge told O’Brien that she “placed the child in harm’s way.”
O’Brien’s father Leo Cote, who was in the courtroom on Thursday, told Eyewitness News the child in question is a 5-year-old girl.
“She didn't do what she is being accused of,” Cote said.
Cote told Eyewitness News O’Brien knows the 5-year-old well.
“My daughter for a year has been screaming for help from DCF, from anyone. And no one would listen and now it has come to this,” Cote said.
But, Cote said the little girl has some extreme mental health issues that haven't been addressed.
“We have caught her hanging her dolls by hair ties,” Cote said. “We asked her, ‘why she is doing this?’ She said ‘the voices are telling her to make her dolls dead.’”
Cote told Eyewitness News O’Brien was trying to restrain the child not harm her. But with some severe charges, the judge kept o O’Brien's bond at $250,000.
“My daughter is not perfect. I'd be the first to admit it,” Cote said. “She has made many mistakes, but she did not do this. That I know.”
It is unclear how serious the injuries to the child were.
O’Brien is back in court at the end of October.
