A teenage girl shot in the face with a BB gun while walking on a popular Meriden street on Thursday night.
Police are asking for the public’s help finding the person responsible for the shooting on Lewis Avenue, which is a busy street near the Meriden mall and a popular park.
The unidentified girl told police she was stuck in her cheek by a BB while near the Interstate 691 underpass around 7 p.m. She was taken to a nearby hospital and police said she is expected to be OK.
“I think it's absolutely terrible it happened," Meriden resident Olivia Sekscenski said.
At the same time of the shooting, police said there was a sporting event going on at Columbus Park around 7 p.m. and they are hoping someone saw something. Right now, police don't have any suspects.
People, who live in Meriden and walk down these sidewalks frequently, said they are shocked to hear about the shooting.
“I think people need to realize that guns are weapons even if it's something minor like a BB gun, but it could potentially be a problem," Sekscenski said.
Police said it is unclear where the girl was headed at the time of the incident.
“If you're going to be playing or using a BB gun you should know what the risks are. You should be safe with it and never fire it at a person," Sekscenski said.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the Meirden Police Department at 203-630-6201.
