Police arrested a grandmother after they found her 3-year-old granddaughter wandering on the streets of Willimantic on Tuesday morning.
An officer was flagged down by a Good Samaritan who spotted the child without shoes by herself on Valley Street around 8:30 a.m.
The child was brought back to the Willimantic Police Department after nobody was seen with her.
Police determined that the child lives a few streets away from where she was located on Valley Street.
A 911 call came in from the child’s grandmother, 47-year-old Kim Martinez, who told police that the 3-year-old girl “had escaped the family residence" while she was sleeping.
Martinez was arrested and charged her with risk of injury to a minor.
Police said the child has not done this before, but that they needed to take precautions.
"Whether it's an accident or not, we have that obligation to safeguard our children and unfortunately, this child was walking around quite a distance from the home. A few hundred meters," said Willimantic Police Cpl. Stan Parizo Jr.
The child was turned over to the officials with the Department of Children and Families, who will investigate the matter.
Martinez was held on $1,000 bond. She is expected to appear in court next Thursday. Police said the parents of the child are not facing any charges.
