With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Channel 3 Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad sought out a special survivor.
One of the squad’s producers came across the story of 30-year-old Rachael Correa of New Britain.
“I’m excited!” said Rachel Correa’s mother. “I can't wait until she sees us! Sees you!”
Rachel Correa’s story was discovered on GoFundMe.com. A link to that page can be found here.
Last December, the mother of two learned she had breast cancer.
She said it was a tough year undergoing many rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and two reconstructive surgeries.
She thought it was over after that. She was wrong.
“I was told I had ovarian cancer and I had to undergo a total hysterectomy Sept. 11,” Rachel Correa said.
The Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad wanted to do something special for her.
With the help of Rachel Correa’s family, the squad dropped in on her this week. Everyone gathered in the same room where she first announced her cancer diagnosis more than a year ago.
“It's very nice that we're able to all gather back here for something positive and a new beginning,” said Maribel Correa, Rachel Correa’s sister.
The family told the squad that she wanted nothing more than to make up for some lost time with her children.
That was the basis of the surprise.
The Great Wolf Lodge in Fitchburg, MA donated a two night stay for her and her family.
The squad paired that with a gas card and some extra spending money.
“I am so excited,” Rachel Correa said. “I really am! I cannot wait to go here! I was not expecting this.”
Correa said her son had been asking about a trip to the lodge since before the squad became involved.
